Just a 10-minute ferry ride from Pier 33 brings you to the infamous prison island known as “The Rock”, home to the most incorrigible prisoners in America during the mid-20th century. Tour Operator worked on the island as part of the crew which set up the “The Rock” movie premier so we have a little special knowledge about this premier tourist destination. There are no formal guided tours of Alcatraz as such – visiting the island is primarily a self-guided experience which you can do at your own pace. Once you arrive on the island, a brief presentation of the island’s history and advice on touring the prison are given. You will enjoy a gripping audio presentation, ‘Doing Time: The Alcatraz Cell House Tour’, featuring recordings of former inmates, prison guards and prison wardens. It takes roughly 2-½ to 3 hours to do the full tour of Alcatraz (including the audio tour). Apart from the prison, other features of interest on Alcatraz include the historic lighthouse, early fortifications and visible reminders of the American Indian occupation that began after the prison closed. You will also see remnants of film production props and incredible views of San Francisco and the Bay Area. Alcatraz Island is accessible via ferry-boat that leaves from Pier 33 near Fisherman’s Wharf, running to the island as early as 9:10am and last boat returns at 6:30pm. Alcatraz Island Tour tickets can sell out days and sometimes months in advance, so please consider purchasing well before your planned visit. Bring along a sweater or sweatshirt, as it is much cooler on the San Francisco Bay but plenty are for sale on Fisherman’s Wharf. The ferry has a limited beverage and snack bar; water is available on the island. You will need a printout of this voucher and all adults will need some sort of official ID. You must sail to Alcatraz based on the time printed on your ticket – no exceptions. Guests to meet at designated Fisherman’s Wharf Meeting Spot (see confirmation email), pickup times depend on what ferry times you are confirmed for. Large group hotel pickups may be arranged at least a week in advance. If you get back from Alcatraz, head over to Fisherman’s Wharf to check out other premiere San Francisco tourist destinations. You must sail to Alcatraz based on the time printed on your ticket – no exceptions. The ferry ride from San Francisco to Alcatraz takes approximately 10-15 minutes. When you have thoroughly explored Alcatraz you can catch any ferry back to Pier 33. Ferries leave about every 30 minutes.
